Go Kings

Tonight was the last game of our flag football regular season. We played our nemesis from the east, the East Side Bad Boys. This was our third game of the season against the Bad Boys and beating them tonight put us at 3-4 for the season. This was our second straight week with solid offense and great defense. With the exception of about two plays our defense was spotless.

It’s great to finish the regular season with two strong victories in a row. We’re heading into the playoffs a different team from the first part of the season. The playoff schedule was filled out when it looked like we had solidified last place, so even though beating the Bad Boys tonight put us in third, we still play our first game against the Cross Town Movers, the regular season champs. I have high hopes for our first playoff game since the Movers are going into the playoffs with a two game losing streak. Check back in two weeks to see how we did.

Sunken Treasure

I picked up the new Jeff Tweedy DVD, Sunken Treasure Live Jeff Tweedy in the Pacific Northwest. I’m watching it right now and so far it is fantastic. The DVD follows Jeff through five stops out here in the northwest. Rachel and I were at the Eugene show and it was fun to see him play a few of those songs again.

I am pretty big Wilco fan, but think I like Jeff solo even more. It doesn’t get much better than him alone on stage with an acoustic guitar. He also tends to play a different set of songs, like the ones from his Uncle Tupelo days, when he is alone.

On a side note, I picked this DVD up after work at a local record store that I thought carried everything. Apparently they don’t. No The White Buffalo! In a moment of weakness I didn’t buy his CD last night at the show, now I am paying the price. At least there’s archive.org (more here).

Microsummaries

I downloaded Firefox 2 this weekend, but haven’t done too much with it. Tonight, I was looking at the Firefox 2 for Developers and saw a very promising feature: Microsummaries. Rather than me try and explain them, I’ll let Mozilla:

Microsummaries are regularly-updated short summaries of web pages. They are compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and they get regularly updated as new information becomes available.

I am sure I will try them out before next season rolls around, but microsummaries will be perfect for The Bet site. If microsummaries could read cookies it would open the door for unlimited uses, but a quick search around the site and it doesn’t look like cookies are accessible. As time goes on, I’m sure people will come up for some great uses of this pretty neat new feature.

Frankenreiter

I went with Cam and Pat to WOW Hall tonight to see Donavon Frankenreiter live. It was a great show. I wasn’t familiar with anything from Donavon until today and only knew that he was the Lost Highway label (which should be enough considering the company he is in).

We got there in time to hear the last few songs from The White Buffalo. That was the biggest mistake of the night. We should have been lined up hours in advance to hear this guy. He was awesome.

A little while later Donavon Frankenreiter came on and put on a fun show. At one point during the show while he was taking requests (unfortunately he didn’t play any classic Timberlake, as requested), someone requested a song that had apparently already been played. There were some laughs, but the highlight of the night was for sure his cover of The Band’s The Weight. He brought a slightly disoriented The White Buffalo back on stage and it was incredible. I realize that liking the cover the best is a little cliché, but it was so much fun.

I will keep my eye on Donavon Frankenreiter (check him out on YouTube) and maybe even see him again if he comes back to Eugene. There is no doubt, however, that I will visit The White Buffalo site on a daily basis to see when he will next return to Eugene (assuming he doesn’t become an overnight sensation and become too big an act for Eugene).
