On music

I made it back from Orlando Friday. I had a really good week at the PHP conference. I think I learned quite a bit. I am not going to talk about tech here anymore, so no details…

On Saturday Rachel and I went to her friend’s house. I had the greatest time. Early in the evening I found out that some of her cohorts (her word, not mine) like ALL the same bands I do. Ryan Adams, Counting Crows, Wilco, Whiskeytown and Uncle Tupelo (I stalked their myspace profiles today and we have even more in common). We spent a great part of the evening talking music, like which Counting Crows album is the best (Chris says Hard Candy, Rob says Recovering the Satellites, I say RtS, also), best Ryan Adams album (I say Demolition), how dreamy is Jack White (I actually didn’t take part in that one, just listened), etc, etc… After that we played a little Trivial Pursuit 90’s Edition. My team lost, but it was close. We got all our pieces, just couldn’t roll into the middle.

Today we had softball practice. I was only able to hit one home run, a shot over the left-center fence. I was hoping to hit more than just one home run, but I think towards the end I found my swing and will be able to bring a little power to the Wrecking Crew.

Summer Tour

Counting Crows announced their 2006 summer tour recently and they are hitting Portland pretty early on. It’s a Wednesday night, we’ll see if we decide to go.

Just for fun I wanted to see if they were going to be in KC the week we are there this summer and no such luck. They play a show in Denver on July 5th and then St. Louis on the 7th, skipping KC completely. I’ve seen a few packed Counting Crows concerts in the Kansas City area, I wonder why they are skipping it this year?

I’m not too excited about seeing the Goo Goo Dolls so unless someone great is opening for them, I probably won’t see them this tour…. save my coins for Wilco or someone.

Headline Humor

I was reading over ESPN’s baseball headlines this morning and found the combination of these two funny:

Pujols ties Helton for second fastest to 1,000 hits and Rockies’ Helton hospitalized with stomach pains.

Holiday

It’s a bit of a holiday here in Eugene today. A true celebration.

Upgrades

I upgraded my site today to the latest version of Wordpress, revision 3708, today and added the new widgets plugins from the guys at Automattic. After adding the plugins, I had to then upgrade to a theme that supported plugins. K2 fit the bill, but I had to pull the latest from SVN to take advantage of the plugins functionality. So much fun!

A night filled with Swap-bot

I spent a good portion of the night working on Swap-bot. I added a few new features tonight.

On a related note, I apparently have the best job in America.

Google Calendar

Google Calendar is open. I just logged in with my gmail account and it work. It looks decent, but I doubt I will use it too much. We’ll see…

More about swap-bot

Lots of excitement over at swap-bot yesterday. First, the server went offline and caused the database to fall into an unstable state. It’s all fixed now, but it caused a tense 90 minutes - most of which were in the middle of Lost.

The real excitement, though, is that we topped 4,000 pageviews yesterday.

Windows on a Mac

Apple just announced that in their next major OS release you will be able to run Windows natively. That’s kind of cool, but the reason I have a Mac is for the operating system, not really the hardware, so I don’t imagine I’ll be doing too much Windows on my Intel Mac (when I get one).

The Bet 2006

For about as long as I have been alive, my dad and a neighbor from LA, Jerry, have participated in their own baseball bet. Not Pete Rose style, this bet consists of each picking two “winners” and two “losers” from each league. They then get a point for each win by a winner and a point for each loss by a loser. I am sure my dad will put the picks for 2006 up on his site soon, but the scores are already up.
