audio

Does anyone know if it is possible to pipe the audio that is going to my speakers to a program, such as lame, using the command line. I am guessing it would be /dev/something, but I am not sure if that is possible. Anyone know?

There is no /dev interface to the audio devices; this is handled through the CoreAudio framework. There are some good reasons for this.

If you need a way to say something in audio via the prompt, you can use the OSX ‘say’ which comes with the basic install. Otherwise I would suggest using something like splay.
